Of course it has to do with whatever you like. But do some do it thinking their hair is not beautiful enough? I absolutely love afro's! They are so beautiful and really bring out a person's eyes and compliment the face. I have seen many different ways to wear an afro some have different type curls and some highlighted, some are let to grow free and some are kept shapely. Some are kept short and others long. No matter what when I see them I can't help but stare. It's beautiful, unique and sexy.
Why Do Black Men and Women Straighten their beautiful Hair?
Baby, I see what you are saying. This board is filled with hate for black people and how black hair is ugly. You are just trying to show the beauty of the black race in an ugly environment. If some of the women and men here had bothered to read your question, then they would see you already know they change it because they like it. But the key is SOME. Do SOME do it thinking their hair is not beautiful? Sadly, yes. Society and television tell you if you have kinky hair whether you are white or black that it needs help. It needs the new frizz tamer or straightner. To Handsome and your ugly answer. Honey you need to be thankful there are people like her on this board trying to make somethin beautiful out of all this mess. Don't go attackin people when they are trying to help. You are right afro's are sexy!

I'm sorry, but the 70s Car Wash fro was not a good look.
Why Do Black Men and Women Straighten their beautiful Hair?
Being diverse. Not all Black people have natural afros, but have natural kinky hair. We like to be diverse and stand out at times. We don't want the same hair style as everyone else. Some wear extentions or weaves and they look really nice, despite it not being their hair. Even braids or corn rolls, I've seen so many different styles with braiding hair, and they look good. Some like the natural kinky look, and many can pull it off. Or they might want it straight, especially girls or guys with long hair, they love to show that Black people have long hair too, and again, it looks nice.

Hair is a fashion statement like clothes and shoes. You change when you want and you wear what makes you feel good
Why Do Black Men and Women Straighten their beautiful Hair?
I straighten my hair simply because it is easier to maintain my hair that way. Besides, in that I'm biracial, I have a mixture of black and white hair, I can never get it to look right in it's natural state. In it's natural state, I look like I have been struck by lighting.
Why Do Black Men and Women Straighten their beautiful Hair?
I don't know i guess it is because they don't recognize their natural beauty or they just want a different look. I have straight hair but permanents always just cause my hair to be frizzy. So i leave it straight.
Why Do Black Men and Women Straighten their beautiful Hair?
I straighten my hair, I cut it, I do almost everything to it EXCEPT let the "naturalness" show. Not that there's anything wrong with having a fro, I mean there are some people who look really good with them, as well as dreads, but then again there are some people who look just as good when their hair is straight so I suppose it's just up to the individual. I personally don't like my hair to be unkempt because it makes me as a person just feel...bad for some reason. Like I'm not myself in a way. I've been getting my hair relaxed since I was like five so I guess I'm just accustomed to it now.

Why Do Black Men and Women Straighten their beautiful Hair?
I'm not sure about black men, although there are some who still do. I'm not a black woman, but I would say it is currently do to individual tastes. African-type hair texture has been advertised as ugly and inferior for many hundreds of years. The European concept of beauty has eclipsed, and sometimes assaulted, the concept of African beauty. Look at Don Imus' racial and sexist statements about the Rutgers' woman basketball team.

Sweetie, why do you change your hair color, cut your hair, style your hair differently whatever your reasons are the same applies to us. I don't think your being mean but it is simply a preference.
I feel my hair is beautiful and yes sometimes I wear it in it's natural state (but no afro's that's not me) and when I get bored with that I wear it in different styles including adding weave or color, it depends on my mood that week. (I am a stylist)
I am black but my hair is neither coarse or kinky and I am not always happy about that I actually add weave sometimes 4 thickness and body because it is so thin and straight.

Why Do Black Men and Women Straighten their beautiful Hair?
Not too many guys straiten their hair accept southern guys and even then its still rare. I like both. I prefer natural hair, but if a girl presses it straight that can be sexy to depending on the girl.
Why Do Black Men and Women Straighten their beautiful Hair?
Well, I am black and I have my hair natural. I straighten it as a styling option usually in winter because it will stay longer. Some black women use relaxers, a chemical concoction, that to straighten their hair. When I really became comfortable with my hair (and I think myself) I began wearing my hair in natural styles. Unfortuantely some of us do it because of the stigma associated with having "nappy" hair. Also remember that some of us cant grow afros because we have straight hair. I am glad you are a fan of Fro's. Thanks
